Fairy Wings

Yesterday I met the cutest little girl at work, she was all dressed up and told me that it was her birthday. I was taken with this little princess and thought it would be nice to make her a card. I don't get the opportunity to make girly cards too often, so this was going to be fun. Here is what I created.

 

I made the wings using the following techniques.

Step 1

Mix Terri Sproul Mixers onto a non-stick mat and let dry.

Step 2

Once the mixers were dry I placed them behind the wire formed shaped wings I made.

Step 3

I filled the wire wings with 3D Crystal Lacquer and let this dry.

 Step 4

Once the wings were dried completely, I was able to snip away any excess mixers from around the wire edge.

Step 5

I stamped my fairy image and colored her with Terri Sproul Mixers and Copic markers. The mixers left a beautiful sheen to the fairy. And of course what would a fairy be without a little glitter, exactly, so I added some glitter to her crown.

Step 6

 I used pop dots and double sided sticky tape to adhere my fairy to the front of my card and to keep the wire wings in place.

The finished result of this card looks so beautiful and I know this little five year old is going to love her card.  I love the fact that I can make more of these cards. However, I will need to make or find a castle image. The one I used was chipboard and I can't replace it, but I was happy to use it up.

Crystal Lacquer Embellished Book Covers

Dale here, with my final DT project.  THANK YOU to Sakura Hobby Craft, Terri Sproul and the whole DT for a LOVELY experience.

As I have stated before, I enjoy shopping at thrift stores.  When I see old unloved books, I usually bring the real sad ones home.  I can use the pages for collage, or art journaling or make into paper fabric.
The book covers sometimes are falling off and that is where this week's project originated.

A set of book covers (sorry forgot to take photos right at the start) that I gessoed, then added all kinds of chipboard or textural embellishments with gel medium. I let them dry completely then gessoed the whole cover again.

This is where the FUN of 3D Crystal Lacquer and all the Terri Sproul Mixers comes in.

I put a blob of 3D Crystal lacquer onto my palette in 6 areas, then added the Mixers and mixed well. I, then, painted the areas on the book covers that I wanted with the bright colours.

Any leftover mixed 3D Crystal Lacquer/Mixer I painted on all the other areas, then used a baby wipe to rub off so it was a faded look.  Then, I cover the whole front and back covers with a layer of 3D Crystal Lacquer.

The coating of 3D Crystal lacquer made the covers more durable I think.
I added a hairband with a brad to the back cover, then used duct tape to make a centre binding (2 layers) before gluing thick scrapbook paper to the inside covers.

 I had a few sewn pages left from another journal, so I added plain copy paper (2 signatures) inside the 3 already sewn up pages and took them to the sewing machine. I set the stitch length longer than normal so it wouldn't tear the pages and slowly sewed thru all the layers.  Because of the duct tape, you will have to toss the needle after as the glue builds up on the needle.
To the front cover, I tied one of the bezel fobs to the hairband.

Painting with 3D Crystal Lacquer Fine Tip Pens

A pin is created and colored with 3D Crystal Lacquer Fine Point Pens.  The website has many sets to choose from, or you can create your own colors by using an empty pen, and adding a mix of 3D Crystal Lacquer and Terri Sproul Mixers blended to form the color you want.

Basically, this is a piece of Friendly Plastic, heated, and stamped glossy cardstock shape pressed in.

Color the stamped image like coloring book with lacquer pens.  Let dry.  Cover whole piece with Clear 3D Crystal Lacquer and let dry.

A hole was drilled at top and wire added, then rhinestone adhered using clear lacquer.  Pin back adhered on back with jewelry glue.

Making Crystal Lacquer Ornaments with a Silicone Mold

There are lots of silicone molds in the craft stores lately.  Sakura Crystal Lacquer Pens are perfect for filling in tiny spaces in these intricate molds!


These molds are flexible, so make sure your mold is sitting on a flat surface when you pour.  I set mine on an empty plastic package so I could move it after I filled it.  The Sakura pens come in lots of colors, and there’s even an empty pen so you can mix your own colors with Terri Sproul Mixers!  The tiny tip is perfect for filling in all the details in these little molds!

Here are my ornaments setting up:


I added some patina to a vintage brass locket with Vintaj Quartz and Onyx Patinas using a small paint brush.  I added some of the Vintaj Onyx Patina to the fleur de lis. To give it a bit of an aged look, I rubbed it off of the high areas of the ornament, leaving it in the low areas.



I used clear Crystal Lacquer to adhere the fleur de lis to the locket.  Then I sealed the entire outside of the piece with clear Crystal Lacquer, applying it with the small paintbrush. Then all I had to do was put it on a chain!

Turning a plastic tile into a prism of glass looking goodness!!  Almost like Dicrohic glass.

3D Crystal Lacquer is the key to creating fast, easy, marbelized accents.  Use the colored 3D Crystal Lacquer, or create your own using Terri Sproul Mixers.

Turn the tile over and on the back side squeeze lines of colored lacquer you want to use.  If you want to create your own color, mix it up and put into an empty applicator bottle.

Once you have the lines of color, use a toothpick, or I used an end of a paintbrush to pull the color straight down from top to bottom, adding a swirl motion as I went.  Play around and see what patterns you come up with! 

(Semi-Transparent so background colors of card, add and further enrich tile colors.)

If you don't like what the result is, just wipe off lacquer and start over.

Lastly, I added some of the Terri Sproul Mixers fine glitter lightly on the back to enhance the shimmery effect.

Use clear 3D Crystal Lacquer to adhere to the card.

Fabric Cuff with Crystal Lacquer Embellishment

Here’s how I make the Crystal Lacquer “film.”  I save the packages from wafer thin dies.  They are perfect for this because they have a little bit of a lip that holds in the Crystal Lacquer.  I pour a little Crystal Lacquer into the plastic container, add Terri Sproul Mixers and stir.  When this hardens, you can cut any shape you want.  Once you trim the edges off, you can put the film through a diecut machine.

I chose my die and then used it to cut a template of white paper.  Then I used the template to cut a
piece of my Crystal Lacquer film.

This allows me to use the smallest possible piece of whatever I am diecutting. When I am cutting a small piece on a large black plate, it’s hard for me to see where to put the material I’m cutting.  So I placed the template on top of the die in the exact place it was cut from, and that told me where to place my Crystal Lacquer film.

I used an awl to make holes in the heart, so I could sew it onto my cuff like a button.

I tore a strip of canvas to use as the base for my cuff.  I cut two pieces, each 8 ½ inches long.  I wanted to turn under ½ inch on each end and I wanted a 7 ½ inch finished cuff.

I chose some materials to work with.  I recently took a class in Gelli Plate printing, and I had some canvas pieces I wanted to use.  They coordinated well with some gauze and  seam binding I had dyed, and with some vintage buttons I just got.

The printed canvas wasn’t long enough to cover the entire cuff, so I cut a strip, centered it on the canvas and stitched it down.

I cut a piece of seam binding, put Fray Check on the ends and pinned it in place to make a loop closure.  Then I cut a piece of the gauze.  The gauze had crinkled itself up while it was drying, so I didn’t have to do anything to it to give it that gathered look.  I decided to stitch down the seam binding before sewing all the layers together, so I turned the edges of the canvas under on the side with the loop and used a straight stitch to secure the seam binding.  It turns out that fabric cuffs are sort of like other bulky bracelets in that you have to allow extra wearing ease.  The cuff was going to be too tight for me this way, so I ended up not turning the other ends of the canvas under.

I assembled all the layers with a zigzag stitch, and I stitched all the way to the end of the unturned edge.

Then I sewed on my heart and my button:

And my cuff was finished!

Note To Self 12x14 Canvas

Hello! today I would like to share with you a project I call "Note to Self" as a reminder to be more thoughtful.

For todays project I used:

 What started out as a blank canvas quickly added up with layers of Acrylic paint, Stencils and Stamps.

I painted the top of the canvas with blue and purple paint and added yellow ochre in the middle and green at the bottom.

Next I stenciled in some trees, dots, and a doily. Now I was ready to stamp! I used my new Terri Sproul Stamps from the Journal set and with my fingers instead of a block pressed my  stamps into place.

 

I used a toothbrush to flick some mixers onto the

canvas to represent a magical presence.

 

Next I made a stencil with my Cricut.

I just cut out some blackout flowers out of cardstock and took

out some molding paste to give it some texture.

 

 

I decided to color the flowers of molding paste

with Terri Sproul Pearl Mixers and 3D Crystal Lacquer.

 

I couldn't quite get my green leaves just right so

I colored them in with Copics.

 Everywhere I put the Pearl Mixers the canvas glistens.

I drew a girls face and colored her in with copic markers.
I found a butterfly and cut it in half to use as wings.

Then I cut a piece of cardstock into a triangle for

her dress and colored her arms in.

 

Next I printed out some words I should be reminding

 myself of in a distressed typeset font and distressed

the edges with Tim Holtz broken china distress inks.

 

 

 

 

Opps almost forgot to color her lips!.. see I do need these notes to self!

Pearlized Votives

For this project, I coloured the 3 votives I have in the house. These are actually wine glasses that I found at the local thrift store.

I started with just the 2 small ones, and liked the effect.  Each one is different.
The one of the right, I thought I'd be smart and use the heat tool to dry the pearlized 3D Lacquer - it created a cracked texture of the lacquer.
The second one was the one on the left with the diamond sequins set into the drying lacquer.
The large one, I added the paper onto the votive before adding the coloured 3D Lacquer.

I used the Lilac Pearl applicator in the Metallic/Pearl set of 3D Crystal Color Lacquer set.

It is thick, so I poured some out onto my plastic paint palette along with plain 3D Crystal Lacquer. Mixed well.

I started to cover the outside of the glass votive (you need to do it on the outside so it doesn't burn) by rolling it in the mixture, then used a stir stix to add more all the while rotating the glass.

Once they were totally covered, I set them upside down for a few minutes, then right side up.  I kept doing this to try to get a marbleized effect until it wouldn't move anymore.  As I said before, the first one, I used a heat tool to set the Lacquer.

For the larger votive, I wanted to add paper to see how it would look.  I coloured some vintage book text with a Portfolio Water Soluble Oil Pastel - Blue Green colour.  

I, used my finger to spread the oil pastel, then cut out the 2 hearts.  

I glued the hearts onto the glass with the 3D Crystal Lacquer, covered them with clear before adding the pink sapphire (from the Terri Sproul's Mixer - Jewel Effects Color set) & 3D Crystal Lacquer, mixed well. I used the stir stix to clear off the heart a little.

I added the diamond sequins into the coloured 3D Crystal Lacquer while it was still sticky. To the bottom of the glass, I punched a 1.75 inch circle of heavy cardstock, glued it underneath with 3D Crystal Lacquer.

I added a piece of satin forest green ribbon to the textured first one.  For the Heart one, I gathered a wide piece of lace, tied it around the stem, then added the gold cording for a bow.

I like how they turned out and I am thinking of stopping in the local thrift store this week, getting a couple more glasses and try different colours of the 3D Crystal Lacquer.
